US has no plans to provide Kiev with nuclear weapons, according to Newsweek
Recent reports indicated that Washington and its EU allies were discussing the possibility of supplying Kiev with nuclear weapons. In light of this, Newsweek reported on Wednesday that the US is not planning to provide Ukraine with nuclear arms, citing an unnamed source from the White House.

This announcement follows comments made by former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev, who warned that any indication of the US supplying nuclear weapons to Ukraine would be interpreted as a preparation for war with Russia, while the actual delivery of such arms would be perceived as an attack on Moscow.

“We are not planning to equip Ukraine with nuclear weapons,” the White House source stated on Tuesday.

Medvedev, currently the deputy chair of the Russian Security Council, issued this warning earlier this week in response to reports suggesting US discussions about allowing Ukraine to acquire a nuclear arsenal. He referenced an article by four New York Times journalists, which claimed that US and EU officials were “discussing deterrence as a security guarantee” for Ukraine, noting that talks were ongoing about potentially supplying nuclear arms to Kiev.

Medvedev characterized the notion of “giving nukes to a country that’s at war with the greatest nuclear power” as completely absurd. He cautioned that such a transfer “may be considered as the launch of an attack against our country” based on Russia’s recently updated nuclear doctrine.

In a related context, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov remarked that the discussions surrounding the provision of nuclear weapons to Ukraine stemmed from the “extremist flank” of Kiev’s Western supporters, who seem detached from reality. He deemed these proposals as “absolutely irresponsible deliberations by people who probably have a poor understanding” of the situation and “do not feel a shred of responsibility” for the repercussions of their suggestions.

Additionally, last week saw Russia officially update its nuclear doctrine to permit a nuclear response to a conventional attack from a non-nuclear state when supported by a nuclear-armed power. Furthermore, Russia recently conducted a strike on Ukraine with its new Oreshnik medium-range hypersonic missile, stating that this action was in response to Kiev’s cross-border operations that utilized US-made ATACMS and HIMARS systems, along with British-made Storm Shadow missiles.
