US halts Ukrainian immigrant initiative
The US Citizenship and Immigration Services has paused its program for Ukrainians following an executive order from President Donald Trump last week. The agency announced on Monday that it is suspending the Uniting for Ukraine (U4U) initiative while it assesses the implications of Trump’s directive.

The executive action by the new president focuses on enhancing US border security and addresses what he referred to as a “large-scale invasion [by] illegal aliens.” Trump’s order includes the termination of all “categorical parole programs” that conflict with his immigration policies, although it does not specifically target Ukrainians.

Initiated by the previous administration under President Joe Biden in April 2022, the U4U program provided a pathway for Ukrainian nationals displaced due to the conflict with Russia to live in the US. Originally limited to 100,000 applicants, the program was eventually expanded.

By mid-2023, over 117,000 individuals had entered the US through the U4U program, which stipulates that each applicant must have an American sponsor. During that same year, the US Homeland Security Service reported that more than 271,000 Ukrainian citizens came to the US as refugees.

Additionally, the Trump administration has implemented a 90-day suspension of most US foreign aid initiatives, including support for Ukraine, with exceptions made for military financing to Israel and Egypt. According to the Financial Times, several diplomats within the Department of State have urged the administration to consider making an exception for Ukraine as well.

During a press conference on Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky asserted that US military assistance had not been halted. However, reports indicate that non-governmental organizations in Ukraine have been instructed to cease most projects funded by the US Agency for International Development.
