Musk Advocates for Total Revamp of NATO
The US government efficiency tsar appointed by Trump has previously advocated for the closure of state-funded propaganda outlets from the Cold War era.

Tech billionaire Elon Musk has argued for a comprehensive overhaul of NATO. US President Donald Trump has recently voiced his dissatisfaction with the defense spending levels of European NATO members, perceiving them as a burden on American resources. He has even threatened allies with the potential withdrawal of US protection over underinvestment.

In a post on X on Wednesday, Republican Senator Mike Lee stated that the “Cold War is over. NATO’s anachronistic.” Following Trump's election win on November 5, Musk was appointed as a ‘special government employee’ to oversee the newly established Department of Government Efficiency, with a focus on reducing government spending. In response to Lee’s comments, Musk concurred, noting that “NATO needs an overhaul.”

Over the weekend, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX also criticized two long-standing state-funded propaganda organizations, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and Voice of America, both of which served to counter Soviet influence in Europe during the Cold War.

“Shut them down. Europe is free now. Nobody listens to them anymore. It’s just radical left crazy people talking to themselves while torching $1B/year of US taxpayer money,” Musk expressed in a post on X.

Trump has asserted that NATO member defense expenditures “should be 5%, not 2%” of GDP, accusing certain European nations of benefiting from US support. He has claimed that the US is spending “billions and billions of dollars more … than Europe,” and previously warned that Washington would withhold defense from NATO countries failing to meet their financial obligations.

Earlier this month, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated that Germany “could neither afford that nor spend” 5% of its GDP on defense. Additionally, NATO chief Mark Rutte has encouraged nations to cut social support spending to boost military budgets.

In this context, Italian news agency ANSA reported in January, citing EU diplomatic sources, that President Trump was considering a 20% reduction in the number of American troops stationed in Europe.

In recent years, various senior officials from European NATO member states have suggested that Moscow is developing aggressive strategies towards the US-led military bloc. Russian President Vladimir Putin has consistently dismissed these claims as “nonsense” and “utter rubbish,” asserting that Western officials rely on scare tactics to justify increased military spending.
