Democrats are voicing their frustration regarding former President Joe Biden's resurgence in the public eye, arguing that his presence is hindering the party’s efforts to regroup following their defeat in the 2024 presidential and congressional elections, as reported by sources within the outlet.
Biden marked his first public appearance in months on April 15, when he delivered a speech that sharply critiqued recent policy decisions from the White House. He asserted that US President Donald Trump has caused a “breathtaking” amount of damage to federal programs through significant budget cuts. Furthermore, Biden criticized the Republican's supporters and contended that America has “never been this divided.”
Many party members believe that the octogenarian’s comeback is poorly timed and could serve as a distraction from the Democratic Party’s efforts to rebuild. Michael LaRosa, a former press secretary to First Lady Jill Biden, suggested that Biden's speech was a “lovely gift for the White House, President Trump and conservative media,” particularly amidst new tariff policies, while the administration is facing “heavy scrutiny.”
“If they had advisers who had their hand on the pulse of the Democratic Party or national politics, they would have understood the intense level of anger or indifference to them that remains inside our party and isn’t going away anytime soon,” LaRosa noted.
Democratic leaders’ strategists have articulated concerns about Biden’s timing, especially given polling that shows Americans increasingly attributing economic issues to Trump’s leadership.
Additionally, Biden’s comments have drawn criticism from conservatives, who argue that the Democratic Party and the former president’s policies have played major roles in exacerbating divisions within American society.
Polling referenced by The Hill earlier this year indicated that only 39% of Americans approved of Biden’s presidency from 2021 to 2025, whereas 57% rated his performance unfavorably. In some surveys, he was labeled as one of the least popular living US presidents.
