The Chinese Foreign Ministry announced on Friday that Beijing has imposed sanctions on seven US defense companies and their executives in retaliation for Washington's arms sales to Taiwan, which are viewed as a violation of the One-China principle.
This announcement follows the authorization by outgoing US President Joe Biden of a $571.3 million military aid package to Taiwan last week.
The ministry expressed that Washington’s actions “interfere in China’s internal affairs, and undermine China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” as they revealed the sanctions.
The companies hit by the sanctions include Insitu Inc., Hudson Technologies Co., Saronic Technologies, Inc., Raytheon Canada, Raytheon Australia, Aerkomm Inc., and Oceaneering International Inc.
While the ministry indicated that “relevant senior executives” from these firms have been blacklisted, it did not disclose their identities.
These sanctions will result in the freezing of “movable and immovable” assets belonging to US companies and their executives in China, along with a ban on any organizations and individuals in China from engaging in trading or collaboration with them.
These restrictions are expected to exacerbate the already tense relations between Beijing and Washington, coinciding with Biden's approval of a historic $895 billion defense budget, which is $9 billion more than the previous year's allocation.
Although the bill does not mention aid for Ukraine, it does include plans aimed at enhancing US presence and defense capabilities in the Indo-Pacific region, primarily to “counter China.” Beijing has condemned the legislation, criticizing its “negative content on China” and for amplifying the ‘China threat’ narrative.
China has consistently reaffirmed its position that Taiwan, which operates autonomously, is an integral part of the nation as per the One-China principle. It has condemned Washington’s arms sales to Taiwan, accusing the US of escalating tensions around the issue.
