Joe Biden grants a last-minute pardon for family member
In his final hours in office, outgoing US President Joe Biden announced a blanket pardon for his family members, providing protection against any potential legal repercussions stemming from Donald Trump’s administration.

Biden asserted that his family has been the target of sustained political attacks aimed at undermining him. “My family has been subjected to unrelenting attacks and threats, motivated solely by a desire to hurt me – the worst kind of partisan politics. Unfortunately, I have no reason to believe these attacks will end,” he stated in his announcement.

The pardon covers “any nonviolent offences against the United States” committed by five of Biden’s family members from January 1, 2014, to the conclusion of his presidency.

“I am exercising my power under the Constitution to pardon James B. Biden, [his wife] Sara Jones Biden, [first sister] Valerie Biden Owens, [her husband] John T. Owens, and [first brother] Francis W. Biden,” Biden remarked, emphasizing that these “pardons should not be mistaken as an acknowledgment that they engaged in any wrongdoing.”

This decision effectively puts an end to the ongoing investigations into James Biden related to influence peddling, which have been scrutinized by Congressional Republicans and media outlets. Although he has not faced criminal charges, Biden's brother has been accused of misleading Congress and serving as an unregistered foreign agent.

Both James Biden and Hunter Biden were subpoenaed in connection with allegations concerning President Biden's involvement in their business dealings in the United States and internationally, particularly in China and Ukraine. Hunter Biden had received a pardon from his father earlier in the year, following his conviction on gun and tax offenses and in light of an impending sentencing in a different matter.

The pardon has sparked controversy, especially in light of Joe Biden’s previous commitments to refrain from intervening in his son’s legal issues.
