Former South Dakota governor Kristi Noem has been confirmed as the head of the US Department of Homeland Security after a Senate vote on Saturday. The vote, which ended with a margin of 59-34, showcased bipartisan support for Noem, who was nominated by President Donald Trump shortly after his win in November’s presidential election.
Following his inauguration last week, Trump enacted a series of executive orders aimed at bolstering border security. Among these actions were the declaration of a national emergency at the US-Mexico border and the termination of automatic birthright citizenship for children born to parents who are not lawful permanent US residents.
Trump has previously praised Noem’s “very strong” background in border security, highlighting her performance as governor of South Dakota as a pivotal factor in her nomination.
During her Senate confirmation hearing, Noem underscored her dedication to securing the US-Mexico border and tackling immigration issues. “We must secure our borders against illegal trafficking and immigration… Getting criminal aliens off of our streets and out of the country will help American communities be safer again,” she told lawmakers.
Noem stated that her background as governor had equipped her to address numerous national security issues, including the crisis at the US-Mexico border and responses to natural disasters.
She further expressed that her beliefs aligned with Trump’s campaign promises to take strong measures regarding illegal immigration. Following her confirmation, Noem committed to prioritizing the reform of what she described as America’s “broken immigration system.”
At 52 years old, Noem has served as South Dakota's governor since 2019 and has become known as a staunch defender of border security. Though she was once viewed as a potential running mate for Trump, her political journey encountered a brief controversy after the release of a memoir, No Going Back, in which she disclosed her decision to euthanize her 14-month-old dog.
As the head of the Department of Homeland Security, Noem will be responsible for overseeing immigration, customs enforcement, emergency management, and security services. She is the fourth member of Trump’s administration to gain Senate approval, following Pete Hegseth as defense secretary, Marco Rubio as secretary of state, and John Ratcliffe as CIA director.
