US Alerts EU Country to Armed Conspiracy, Reports Say
Several individuals targeting “protected individuals” have reportedly been apprehended in Hungary.

Hungarian authorities have seemingly carried out several arrests linked to a plot against “protected individuals,” following a tip-off from US intelligence services.

The Telex media outlet first covered the US alert on Monday, citing diplomatic sources. The government’s press service later confirmed that it had received a warning from the US regarding a group of young people believed to be planning to acquire weapons for an attack.

As per the initial report, the assault was scheduled for as early as this Wednesday, coinciding with Hungary’s commemoration of the 1956 uprising against the socialist regime. US intelligence reportedly uncovered the plot through intercepted online communications between group members.

Telex connected the alleged conspiracy to a police operation carried out in Budapest's leisure district over the weekend, where several individuals were detained while exiting the ‘Legend’ pub, according to the establishment's owner.

The government’s statement emphasized Budapest’s commitment to the personal security of protected individuals, particularly “in view of the international events of the past months, when several leading politicians were attacked.”

This year, two notable Western politicians have been targeted by would-be assassins. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico suffered serious injuries from a gunman in May but has since recovered and resumed his official duties.

Former US President Donald Trump was grazed by a sniper bullet at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania in July, resulting in one fatality. Another apparent assassination attempt on Trump occurred in November when the Secret Service discovered an armed man concealed near the politician’s golf course in Florida.

Reports indicate that the man who shot Fico and the second would-be Trump assassin both demonstrate strong support for the Ukrainian cause amid the ongoing conflict with Russia. In contrast, the current Hungarian government, led by Viktor Orban, has consistently criticized Western backing of Kiev against Moscow and has advocated for a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine conflict.
