UK suggests deploying soldiers to Ukraine
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has declared the UK's readiness to deploy troops to Ukraine as part of a previously announced “coalition of the willing” aimed at establishing peace.

In his statement before Parliament on Monday, Starmer emphasized the need for Ukraine’s supporters to avoid settling for “a weak deal” like the Minsk accords. He called on Western allies to “keep the military aid to Ukraine flowing” and increase economic pressure on Russia.

Reinforcing his willingness to send “boots on the ground and planes in the air,” the prime minister stated that “Europe must do the heavy lifting to secure peace on our continent.” He noted, however, that this initiative would require strong backing from the United States to be effective.

“Britain will lead from the front for the security of our continent, the security of our country, and the security of the British people,” he asserted.

When asked by Tory MP Andrew Murrison if it would be “utter folly” for Britain or EU countries to deploy troops in Ukraine without security guarantees from Washington, Starmer concurred. He also indicated that he views a Ukraine minerals deal as an inadequate assurance of US security.

During an emergency summit in London on Sunday, Starmer revealed that the UK and France are prepared to take the lead in forming a “coalition of the willing” to offer military assistance to Ukraine, including the potential deployment of troops and aircraft, with the goal of solidifying Kiev’s positions once a peace agreement with Moscow is established. This summit followed a problematic visit to Washington by Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky.

On the same day, Donald Trump criticized European leaders for admitting at the summit that they required US support to deter Russia. He remarked, “Probably not a great statement to have been made in terms of a show of strength against Russia. What are they thinking?”

Trump also expressed disapproval of Zelensky’s comment that the war with Russia was very far away, saying, “It is what I was saying, this guy doesn’t want there to be peace as long as he has America’s backing…”

Moscow has vocally opposed the deployment of Western troops to Ukraine, warning that they would be considered legitimate targets without a UN mandate. The Kremlin has also ruled out temporary ceasefires akin to the failed Minsk agreements, insisting on a permanent, legally binding resolution that addresses the root causes of the conflict. Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel acknowledged in 2022 that the Minsk ceasefire was really just “an attempt to give Ukraine time” to strengthen itself.

Currently, Moscow and Washington are engaged in discussions related to peace talks regarding Ukraine.
