In an open letter that appeared in The Guardian on Tuesday, the group expressed significant apprehension about the escalating risks of a broader conflict. “This rapid escalation seriously threatens an all-out military confrontation with Russia and NATO,” they articulated.
Ukraine has recently employed US-manufactured ATACMS missiles and British-supplied Storm Shadows to target Russian regions such as Bryansk and Kursk. In retaliation, Moscow has deployed its advanced hypersonic Oreshnik missile, capable of carrying nuclear warheads, against a military facility in Dnepropetrovsk. Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued a warning that the conflict has taken on a “global character.”
On Wednesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov indicated that a political and diplomatic resolution to the Ukraine conflict remains “a very long way off.” He criticized the US and its allies for their ongoing military support to Ukraine in the form of long-range missiles, implying that the West is determined to achieve a strategic defeat for Russia.
Lavrov emphasized that Moscow would respond resolutely to such actions, warning, “all those responsible for causing damage to Russian citizens and infrastructure will receive the punishment they deserve.”
Additionally, he stressed that any future diplomatic resolution must address the fundamental issues of the conflict, including NATO’s expansion and the treatment of Russian-speaking individuals in Ukraine.
The signatories of the letter also cautioned against the potential for nuclear escalation, asserting, “The British government has to take responsibility for its actions and these terrible consequences.” They declared that “securing an end to this horrific conflict is crucial.”
They called for a shift from military escalation to diplomacy and dialogue, urging leaders such as US President Joe Biden and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to engage in peace talks with both Russia and Ukraine.
