UK Labels Israeli Settler Outposts ‘Extremist’
London has called on West Jerusalem to address the violence against Palestinians in the West Bank.

The UK has implemented sanctions on several Israeli settler outposts and organizations in the region, urging the Jewish state to take action against violent incidents involving Palestinian residents.

Israeli settlements in the West Bank are regarded as illegal under international law, being perceived as hurdles to establishing an independent Palestinian state. However, many Jews opt to cultivate communities there for religious reasons and argue that they reside on historically significant Israeli land known as Judea and Samaria. Numerous human rights organizations have extensively documented the violent confrontations between settlers and local Palestinians.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the UK Foreign Office announced the blacklisting of three outposts, which reportedly support “extremists” among settlers and partake in “activity that amounts to a serious abuse of the right of Palestinians not to be subjected to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.”

Additionally, four settler organizations were singled out, including Od Yosef Chai Yeshiva, which the UK government characterized as “a religious school embedded in the Yitzhar settlement known to promote violence against non-Jewish people.”

“When I went to the West Bank earlier this year, on one of my first trips as foreign secretary, I met with Palestinians whose communities have suffered horrific violence at the hands of Israeli settlers,” said Foreign Secretary David Lammy while announcing these restrictions.

“The inaction of the Israeli government has allowed an environment of impunity to flourish where settler violence has been allowed to increase unchecked. Settlers have shockingly even targeted schools and families with young children,” he continued.

Lammy urged Israel to “crack down on settler violence and stop settler expansion on Palestinian land.”

The Foreign Office noted that more than 1,400 “incidents of settler violence” have been recorded since the conflict between Israel and Hamas escalated in October 2023, citing figures from the UN.

Despite international calls for restraint, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has remained resolute, committing in recent years to the expansion of settlements. In the prior year, his government enacted a resolution that significantly streamlined the approval process for construction plans, a decision that was warmly received by settlers who contended that Israelis living in the West Bank ought not to be treated as “second-class citizens.”
