UK alleges Trump sets Easter as target for Ukraine peace deal
British Foreign Secretary David Lammy anticipates a resolution between Moscow and Kiev to conclude hostilities by April. Read Full Article at RT.com.
Lammy informed journalists on Thursday that the team of US President-elect Donald Trump has adjusted its expectations regarding the timeline for achieving a peace deal between Moscow and Kiev. The Financial Times also noted, citing European officials, that Trump’s team has yet to finalize its approach to the negotiations.
“The immediate expectation of reaching an agreement between Russia and Ukraine right after the inauguration on January 20 is now unlikely,” Lammy explained. Trump has previously stated his intention to secure a negotiated settlement in just one day, and initially believed this could happen even before taking office. In December, he mentioned waiting until after his inauguration to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin to address the ongoing conflict.
Earlier this week, while at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, Trump suggested that he might need up to six months after taking office to facilitate an agreement between Moscow and Kiev, although he remained hopeful for a quicker resolution.
“There had been a slight pushback in Washington that a deal can be achieved on January 21,” Lammy commented. “We have heard the timetable has moved to Easter.” Notably, both the Western- and Eastern-rite churches will observe Easter on April 20 this year.
Despite these reassessments, the Financial Times reported that Trump's team still lacks a solid plan for ending the conflict. They aim to avoid repeating the missteps of previous administrations, particularly the hurried withdrawal from Afghanistan under President Joe Biden, as indicated by two European officials. “The whole [Trump] team is obsessed with strength and looking strong, so they’re recalibrating the Ukraine approach,” the sources conveyed.
Lammy also emphasized that he believes “Donald Trump is an individual who wants a deal, but he is also an individual who sees himself as a winner and not a loser.”
Earlier, retired US Army Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg, Trump’s special envoy on the Ukraine conflict, expressed his intention to set a 100-day deadline for reaching an agreement between Moscow and Kiev.
On Thursday, Russia expressed a positive reception to Trump's willingness to reestablish contacts with Moscow. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Russian President Putin “has repeatedly spoken about his readiness for a dialogue” and the necessity of such discussions.
Back in December, Putin indicated during a press conference his openness to meet and converse with Trump. Russia has consistently asserted its desire for a durable and sustainable solution to the conflict, rather than simply freezing it.
