Trump vows to deport, incarcerate foreign students for 'illegal protests'

Trump's social media message follows the announcement by a federal task force on antisemitism last week, which declared plans to visit 10 college campuses where antisemitic incidents have occurred.

Trump vows to deport, incarcerate foreign students for 'illegal protests'
President Donald Trump issued a warning on Tuesday regarding the federal funding of colleges that permit “illegal protests,” asserting that American students involved will face expulsion.

“All Federal Funding will STOP for any College, School, or University that allows illegal protests,” Trump stated on Truth Social. “Agitators will be imprisoned/or permanently sent back to the country from which they came. American students will be permanently expelled or, depending on on the crime, arrested. NO MASKS! Thank you for your attention to this matter.”

This statement follows a recent announcement from a federal task force addressing antisemitism, which plans to visit ten college campuses that have experienced antisemitic incidents since the Hamas attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023.

The campuses include Columbia University, George Washington University, Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University, New York University, Northwestern University, the University of California, Los Angeles; the University of California, Berkeley; the University of Minnesota, and the University of Southern California.

In the months after the attack, several of these institutions witnessed prominent anti-war protests, attracting considerable criticism from Republican lawmakers.

Trump has initiated an executive order that instructs the Justice Department, along with the attorney general, to take “immediate action” against antisemitic crimes such as vandalism and intimidation, and to investigate “anti-Jewish racism in leftist, anti-American colleges and universities.”

On Monday, the Departments of Health and Human Services, Education, and the General Services Administration announced a thorough review of Columbia University’s federal contracts and grants due to an ongoing Title VI investigation related to the institution.

All educational institutions receiving federal aid must adhere to Title VI, which prohibits discrimination based on shared ancestry, ethnic characteristics, or national origin. Schools found in violation of this law risk losing their funding.

Columbia University faces a potential loss of $51.4 million in federal contracts due to “ongoing inaction in the face of relentless harassment of Jewish students,” as noted in a press release indicating that the government is considering “stop work orders” for these contracts. The task force will also undertake a comprehensive review of the over $5 billion in federal grant commitments to Columbia.

“Institutions that receive federal funds have a responsibility to protect all students from discrimination,” Education Secretary Linda McMahon remarked. “Columbia’s apparent failure to uphold their end of this basic agreement raises very serious questions about the institution’s fitness to continue doing business with the United States government.”
