Trump selects staunch supporter to lead FBI
The US president-elect has appointed Kash Patel, a longtime ally and former adviser, to lead the agency as the next FBI director.

Donald Trump has selected Patel for this role, pending Senate confirmation, to succeed Christopher Wray. Trump has frequently criticized Wray, accusing him of politically motivated actions against him and his associates.

“Kash is a brilliant lawyer, investigator, and ‘America First’ fighter who has spent his career exposing corruption, defending justice, and protecting the American people,” Trump stated on Truth Social on Saturday.

In his announcement, Trump highlighted Patel's significant contributions in "uncovering the Russia Hoax," which pertains to allegations of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia during the 2016 election. He remarked that Patel “did an incredible job” advising him on national security matters and during his tenure as chief of staff to Acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller in Trump’s first administration.

Under Patel’s direction, the FBI is expected to “end the growing crime epidemic” and confront “migrant criminal gangs,” according to Trump.

The former president has long accused Democrats and the Biden administration of using the FBI and the Department of Justice as instruments for politically motivated investigations, labeling this approach a “witch hunt.” He has also criticized Wray’s competency.

“He knows nothing about the terrorists and other criminals pouring into our country at record levels. His only focus is destroying J6 Patriots, raiding Mar-a-Lago, and saving radical left lunatics, like the ones now in DC burning American flags and spray painting over our great national monuments,” Trump said in a social media post about Wray in July 2024.

Patel, whose parents are Indian immigrants and who previously worked as a public defender, served for several years as a prosecutor with the Justice Department. He caught the attention of the Trump administration while working for the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.

The 40-year-old loyalist recently released a book criticizing the FBI and the Department of Justice, referring to them as “government gangsters” and alleging their involvement in “deep state corruption” within the US.

Patel has advocated for a complete overhaul of the FBI, suggesting it should abandon its intelligence-gathering functions and concentrate more on organized crime issues.

Moreover, he has pushed for stricter measures against government officials who leak information to the press and proposed legal changes to facilitate actions against journalists. In a December interview with Steve Bannon, Patel expressed intentions to identify the “conspirators” who allegedly assisted outgoing President Joe Biden in rigging the 2020 election—an assertion Trump has repeatedly echoed.

“We will go out and find the conspirators – not just in government, but in the media… whether it’s criminally or civilly... we’re going to come after the people in the media who lied about American citizens, who helped Joe Biden rig presidential elections,” he asserted, claiming these investigations will illuminate the scope of the Biden administration’s “crimes.”
