US President Donald Trump has revealed a new initiative that plans to allocate up to $500 billion toward artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Known as Project Stargate, this initiative was introduced on Tuesday and involves a partnership between major US tech companies OpenAI and Oracle, along with the Japanese investment firm SoftBank.
During the announcement, Trump stood alongside executives from the three primary corporate collaborators, who have committed $100 billion in investment, with an additional $400 billion sought over the coming four years.
He referred to the project as a “monumental undertaking” and an “resounding declaration of confidence in America’s potential under a new president,” emphasizing its role in maintaining US dominance in the AI tech competition against China and others.
Oracle Chairman Larry Ellison noted that the first Stargate data centers are currently being constructed in Texas. Plans include up to 20 facilities, each covering half a million square feet, designed to meet the demanding computational needs of AI systems. Trump indicated that the initiative could create over 100,000 jobs throughout the nation.
OpenAI, the developer behind the widely recognized AI model ChatGPT, provided further information in a statement, identifying Arm, Microsoft, and NVIDIA as “key initial technology partners.”
According to a report from 2023 by the news outlet The Information, Microsoft and OpenAI were working together on an AI supercomputer dubbed ‘Stargate,’ with an estimated cost of $100 billion. However, it remains unclear whether this endeavor is linked to the newly announced Stargate initiative by Trump.
OpenAI stated that in collaboration with its partners, it seeks to “to build and develop AI – and in particular AGI – for the benefit of all of humanity,” using the acronym for Artificial General Intelligence.
Artificial general intelligence represents a yet-to-be-realized form of AI capable of undertaking a broad spectrum of tasks, unlike the specialized models available today. Technology experts have cautioned that while this technology could be profoundly transformative, it also carries risks for human civilization.
Upon taking office on Monday, Trump rescinded an executive order from former President Joe Biden issued in 2023 that was intended to address AI-related risks.
