US President-elect Donald Trump is moving swiftly to alter Washington's policies regarding Ukraine, even with several weeks remaining before his inauguration, according to Bloomberg.
An unnamed former official from the Trump administration informed the agency that the Republican leader “will have an immediate head start thanks to the perception that he will be tougher than his predecessor.” This official noted that some US adversaries might alter their actions before Trump's inauguration, as they could be “deterred by the threat of US retaliation,” while others might seek “to exploit their remaining leverage before President Joe Biden leaves office.”
Bloomberg reported that the change in dynamics is “felt most acutely in Ukraine,” especially since Trump has claimed he could resolve the conflict within 24 hours of his election. The president-elect has already communicated with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, while X owner Elon Musk—which has connections to Trump and has proposed that Ukraine cede territory to Russia to achieve peace—was also reportedly involved in the conversation.
In related developments, Shelby Magid, the deputy director of the Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Center, told Bloomberg that Trump’s election victory has influenced Ukraine's stance on negotiations. She mentioned that Ukraine is now “moving in the direction – knowing that Trump has won – of accepting that negotiations are a reality.”
The article noted that the transition period in the US is typically tumultuous, a situation compounded by Trump’s intention to shift US policy. Bloomberg mentioned that these actions have “handcuffed the Biden administration,” as many US allies hesitated to act until they knew who the incoming president would be.
Regarding a potential resolution to the Ukraine conflict, the Wall Street Journal highlighted that one of the plans being considered involves Ukraine giving up its aspirations to join NATO in the immediate future and establishing a ceasefire based on the current front line. While Zelensky has dismissed any concessions to Russia, including “trading” territory, reports from Ukrainian media suggest he might struggle to resist US pressure if Trump determines that Ukraine must strike a peace deal with Russia.
Russia has outright rejected the idea of freezing the conflict, maintaining that all military objectives—such as Ukrainian neutrality, demilitarization, and denazification—must be fulfilled. However, Moscow has indicated a willingness to engage in discussions aimed at resolving the crisis.
