According to Kucinich, a former two-time Democratic presidential candidate and an eight-term US congressman, president-elect Donald Trump will face significant challenges in resolving the foreign and domestic issues left by President Joe Biden. In an interview with Afshin Rattansi on RTN's Going Underground, Kucinich emphasized that Trump's success will hinge on shifting the focus of US politics away from the “globalist aspirations of the State Department” to address pressing domestic concerns.
Kucinich praised Trump’s victory over Democrat Kamala Harris, describing it as a “historic shift” towards “populism” in American politics. He remarked, “[The US] has come through a very dark period where the government put this country to the edge of World War III, and people don’t want that.” He highlighted that ordinary Americans are more concerned with basic issues like paying bills and “making ends meet,” which he referred to as “very practical aspirations they have in common with people around the world.” According to Kucinich, he believes Trump’s presidency “will depend on not getting further involved in foreign entanglements.”
Kucinich observed that the economy is unstable, pointing out that “[t]his economy is shaking, the dollar is not in the same position it was in four years ago… the previous administration has not been successful in reviving the economy with all this money for Wall Street but not enough for main street.” He attributed the issues to the Biden administration's “billions into wars ‘that are not necessary.’”
He underscored the considerable work ahead for Trump, stressing the need to reconsider the US's role in Europe and the Middle East and to move on from the conflicts instigated during Biden’s term. Kucinich expressed optimism that Trump could withdraw the US from these global conflicts, leveraging his “deal-making finesse.” He characterized Trump as a “deal-maker… a family man concerned about children and grandchildren,” adding that he is “not personally interested in seeing the US expand into war; he’s not a globalist in that way.”
Furthermore, Kucinich suggested that Trump should consider fostering cooperation with the “new world” emerging in response to “disastrous sanctions and wars,” highlighting BRICS as one potential partnership for the US.
