U.S. President-elect Donald Trump is expected to launch his deportation efforts with a significant raid in Chicago, scheduled for one day after his inauguration, as reported by the Wall Street Journal on Friday. The operation is anticipated to involve hundreds of immigration officers.
The raid will commence on Tuesday morning and extend throughout the week, with estimates of 100 to 200 Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers being deployed to the city. The focus will be on illegal immigrants with criminal backgrounds, but sources indicate that anyone present during the arrests who entered the country unlawfully will also be apprehended.
Trump had pledged during his campaign that if elected, he would lead “the largest deportation operation in American history.” In a recent MSNBC interview, he stated that the deportations would begin with illegal immigrants who have committed crimes in the U.S. before subsequently addressing “people outside of criminals.”
Estimates suggest there are between 11 million and 35 million illegal immigrants residing in the United States.
Trump has appointed former ICE Director Tom Homan as his ‘border czar’ to oversee the deportations. Homan remarked at a Republican dinner in Chicago last month, “We’re going to start right here in Chicago, Illinois. And if the Chicago mayor doesn’t want to help, he can step aside. But if he impedes us, if he knowingly harbors or conceals an illegal alien, I will prosecute him.”
Sources cited by the Wall Street Journal indicated that Chicago was selected for this initial raid due to its significant illegal immigrant population and the tension between Trump and the city’s Democratic mayor, Brandon Johnson.
Chicago operates as a ‘sanctuary city,’ meaning local authorities do not inquire about immigration status and are prohibited from cooperating with federal immigration agencies such as ICE.
Johnson has committed to maintaining these policies, and on Wednesday, the Chicago City Council voted 39-11 against a measure that would have permitted city police officers to collaborate with ICE on immigration cases.
In a statement to the Wall Street Journal, the Chicago Police Department clarified that while its officers would not participate in the upcoming raid, they “will not intervene or interfere with any other government agencies performing their duties.”
The newspaper reported that further raids are expected, with major immigrant hubs like New York, Los Angeles, Denver, and Miami identified as potential targets for the Trump administration.
