U.S. President Donald Trump has directed the Pentagon to formulate a strategy for a new integrated missile defense system, asserting that a potential advanced long-range aerial attack poses the "most catastrophic threat" to the country.
On Monday, Trump tasked Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth with the responsibility of designing the system through an executive order named "The Iron Dome for America."
Hegseth has 60 days to devise a plan that will shield the U.S. from "ballistic, hypersonic, advanced cruise missiles, and other next-generation aerial attacks from peer, near-peer, and rogue adversaries," while also envisioning a new multi-layered missile defense network.
According to the executive order, “Over the past 40 years, rather than lessening, the threat from next-generation strategic weapons has become more intense and complex with the development by peer and near-peer adversaries of next-generation delivery systems and their own homeland integrated air and missile defense capabilities.”
The directive compels the establishment of various components for the proposed missile defense system, which includes the “development and deployment of proliferated space-based interceptors,” capable of intercepting ballistic missiles during their boost phase, enhancements to the “underlayer and terminal-phase intercept capabilities,” in addition to unspecified "capabilities to defeat missile attacks prior to launch."
Trump has consistently pledged to establish an Israeli-style integrated missile defense system; however, its implementation for the United States, a significantly larger country than Israel, remains uncertain.
While the order suggests that the plans should be included in next year’s budget, it does not specify any cost estimates for the ambitious initiative, nor does it outline a timeline for when the missile shield is expected to be operational.
Israel’s Iron Dome system is mainly designed to intercept small, crude unguided rockets, drones, and artillery shells, while other systems address different threats, such as sophisticated long-range ballistic and cruise missiles.
