German police have arrested the individual who is accused of stabbing a Spanish tourist at Berlin’s iconic Holocaust memorial on Friday.
The incident occurred in the Mitte district of the German capital just two days before the Bundestag election.
According to news agency RBB, the suspect suddenly attacked a man within the field of concrete slabs which make up the monument honoring Jews murdered by the Third Reich. The victim is currently hospitalized and reported to be in stable condition.
The suspect later approached a group of police officers on the same day. Police spokesman Florian Nath informed reporters that the assailant had blood on his hands at the time of his detention.
“There is no information about the man’s identity as of yet. The weapon has not been recovered,” Nath stated.
Germany has experienced a series of terrorist attacks in recent months. In December, a Saudi-born anti-Islam activist drove an SUV into a crowd at a Christmas market in Magdeburg, resulting in six deaths and around 299 injuries. In August 2024, a Syrian refugee fatally stabbed three individuals in Solingen. Additionally, last month, an Afghan asylum seeker attacked an adult and a toddler in Aschaffenburg.
On February 13, another Afghan asylum seeker drove a vehicle into a trade union demonstration in Munich, killing a mother and her 2-year-old daughter, while injuring 37 others.
This increase in terrorism has sparked renewed calls for stricter measures against immigration and extremism, topics that have dominated the federal election campaign.
