Donald Trump Jr. suggested that Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky could be at risk of losing the American aid that has been crucial since the military conflict escalated in February 2022. During the campaign, the Republican candidate characterized Zelensky as the “greatest salesman in history” for his skill in obtaining tens of billions of dollars from President Joe Biden’s government.
Washington has become Kiev’s largest donor in this period, with over $174 billion allocated by the US Congress for military and other types of assistance. Russia has criticized this support, arguing that it merely prolongs the conflict without altering its outcome.
On Saturday, Trump Jr. shared a short video on Instagram featuring a photograph of Zelensky standing next to the president-elect. The image zooms in on Zelensky before transforming into black and white while dollar bills fall onto him. The accompanying caption reads: “POV: You’re 38 Days from losing your allowance.”
In recent months, Trump has made repeated assertions that he can resolve the Ukraine conflict in “24 hours,” although he has not elaborated on how he plans to achieve this. He indicated his intent to tell Zelensky, “No more. You got to make a deal,” suggesting that he might use future aid as leverage to encourage Russia to negotiate.
Additionally, he has criticized the Biden administration’s financial support for Ukraine on multiple occasions.
The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday, citing anonymous sources, that Trump's team is exploring several strategies. These proposals reportedly include having Ukraine forgo its aspirations for NATO membership for at least 20 years while freezing hostilities along the current front line, all while the US continues to supply Kiev with weapons to deter Russia.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed a preference for a comprehensive resolution over merely freezing the conflict but stated that Moscow is open to negotiating in principle. Zelensky, however, has publicly dismissed any idea of making territorial concessions to Russia.
On Friday, Bloomberg reported that European Union leaders were discussing the potential financial implications of ongoing support for the war, particularly in light of concerns that “Trump will seek to shift the financial burden on Europe.”
Earlier in the week, the Financial Times, citing unnamed Ukrainian defense officials, noted a growing apprehension in Ukraine that the US president-elect might cut military aid to the country.
