Both Haley and Pompeo have expressed criticism of Trump in the past but later offered their endorsements for his 2024 campaign.
In a social media update on Saturday, Trump stated that he would not be inviting Haley or Pompeo “to join the Trump Administration which is currently in formation,” and he added, “I very much enjoyed and appreciated working with them previously, and would like to thank them for their service to our Country.”
Following a decisive victory in the US presidential election on November 5, where he defeated Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump is now reviewing potential candidates for his upcoming administration before his inauguration on January 20.
Haley, a former governor of South Carolina, served as the US ambassador to the United Nations during Trump's first term and was a competitor against him in this year’s Republican primary before ultimately endorsing him.
Pompeo, who held the position of CIA director under Trump, was speculated to be a candidate for defense secretary, but media reports indicated that his candidacy faced strong pushback from some of Trump’s close allies, including Donald Trump Jr. and conservative commentator Tucker Carlson.
Both Pompeo and Haley have actively supported increasing US military assistance to Ukraine, arguing that such support is vital for preventing a wider conflict.
In July, Pompeo presented an aggressive strategy for Ukraine that included expanded weapon transfers, which contradicted Trump’s assertions during his campaign. Trump has suggested he could resolve the situation within the first 24 hours of his presidency, though he has not detailed how he plans to do this.
Moreover, Trump has expressed skepticism about Ukraine's chances of prevailing against Russia, hinting that he may halt financial support to Kyiv and labeling Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky as “the greatest salesman in history.”
In her advocacy, Haley supported Ukraine’s request to join NATO, intending to send a strong “signal” to Russia. Moscow has cited Ukraine's aspirations for NATO membership as a significant factor in the ongoing conflict, consistently condemning arms deliveries to Kyiv as actions that merely extend hostilities without altering the eventual outcome.
