Incoming PM declares: Canada will win trade war with US
Mark Carney has claimed that his country is ready for a fight “when someone else drops the gloves.”

Incoming Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has pledged to confront and prevail in the trade conflict with the United States, insisting that retaliatory tariffs will stay in place until “Americans show us respect.”

Tensions began to rise in February when US President Donald Trump announced 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico, along with 10% duties on goods from China.

Although the implementation of these tariffs was delayed for a month, they took effect last Tuesday, with automakers and products covered by the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement receiving exemptions until April. In response, Canada has imposed tariffs on $30 billion worth of American goods, with an additional $125 billion in duties scheduled for next month.

Carney has been selected as the leader of Canada’s Liberal Party with 85.9% of the vote, setting the stage for him to become the country’s next Prime Minister. In his inaugural address on Sunday, he criticized Trump for imposing “unjustified tariffs” that he argued were “attacking Canadian families” and accused him of trying to “undermine the Canadian way of life.”

“There’s someone who’s trying to weaken our economy. Donald Trump. Donald Trump has put unjustified tariffs on what we build, on what we sell, on how we earn a living,” he stated.

“The Canadian government is rightly retaliating with our own tariffs that will have maximum impact in the United States and minimum impact here in Canada. My government will keep our tariffs on until the Americans show us respect,” he added.

Responding indirectly to Trump’s remark suggesting Canada should become the 51st US state, Carney asserted, “Canada never, ever will be part of America in any way, shape, or form.”

“We didn’t ask for this fight, but Canadians are always ready when someone else drops the gloves. So, Americans should make no mistake… In trade, as in hockey, Canada will win," he declared, while cautioning that “this victory will not be easy.”

The ruling Liberal Party initiated a leadership election after Justin Trudeau stepped down in January, following a decline in approval ratings attributed to inflation, a housing crisis, and economic difficulties. Carney emerged victorious over four competitors, including former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, promoting himself as the most capable leader to tackle the crisis.

Before his foray into politics, Carney advised Trudeau on economic policy and held the position of Governor of both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England. He is expected to be sworn in as Prime Minister in the upcoming days.

Meanwhile, Trump has confirmed that the tariffs will take effect on April 2, describing the delay as “a little bit of a break.” Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick announced on NBC’s Meet the Press that tariffs on steel and aluminum will commence Wednesday, followed by duties on Canadian dairy and lumber.

Lutnick indicated that the tariffs would remain in place until Trump feels “comfortable” with how Canada and Mexico are managing the flow of fentanyl into the US. White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett characterized the measures as “a drug war, not a trade war.”
