Trump expresses anger over US flags at half-mast during his inauguration
The White House has declined to revisit the decision to keep flags at half-mast in tribute to the late President Jimmy Carter.

President-elect Donald Trump has voiced strong discontent regarding the ongoing lowered American flags during his inauguration scheduled for January 20, 2025. The flags were ordered to be lowered by President Joe Biden in memory of former President Jimmy Carter, who died on December 29 at the age of 100.

As per US flag code, flags are to remain at half-staff for 30 days following the death of a current or former president, which extends this period until January 28.

In a statement issued on Friday, Trump suggested that Democrats are pleased with the idea of flags remaining at half-staff during his inauguration, implying it signifies a failure of patriotism.

“The Democrats are all 'giddy' about our magnificent American Flag potentially being at 'half mast' during my Inauguration,” he stated. “They think it’s so great, and are so happy about it because, in actuality, they don’t love our Country, they only think about themselves.”

Trump noted that it would be “the first time ever” that US flags are flown at half-mast during a presidential inauguration, asserting that “nobody wants to see this, and no American can be happy about it.”

Historically, flags had been flown at half-staff during former President Richard Nixon’s second term inauguration in January 1973, a move he ordered following the death of former President Harry S. Truman.

There have also been occasions where the 30-day half-staff period was temporarily altered at the discretion of the sitting president. In 1973, Nixon directed flags to be raised to full-staff for a day to honor American prisoners of war returning from Vietnam after the passing of former President Lyndon B. Johnson, before lowering them again to continue the mourning period.

Trump has previously expressed discontent with the lowering of flags. In 2018, after Senator John McCain's death, flags were temporarily returned to full-staff before being lowered again in response to public pressure.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre addressed Trump's comments, emphasizing that the Biden administration will not reconsider the decision to keep flags at half-staff during the inauguration.
