US President Donald Trump has suggested that the United States take control of the Gaza Strip, characterizing the area as a “demolition site” in need of redevelopment.
During a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday, Trump presented his plan for the US to eliminate unexploded ordnance, reconstruct infrastructure, and generate jobs and housing in the region.
“The US will take over the Gaza Strip, and we will do a job with it too,” Trump stated to reporters.
He did not dismiss the possibility of deploying US troops to Gaza, remarking, “If it’s necessary, we’ll do that.” He added, “I do see a long-term ownership position and I see it bringing great stability to that part of the Middle East.”
Trump envisions turning Gaza into the “Riviera of the Middle East.”
A significant component of this proposal involves relocating roughly two million Palestinian residents of Gaza to neighboring nations such as Egypt and Jordan. While Trump claimed that regional leaders were in favor of the idea, he failed to provide specifics on how such resettlement would be carried out.
Netanyahu praised Trump’s initiative, describing it as “thinking outside the box with fresh ideas” and expressing hope that it could alter the course of history.
However, the announcement has faced extensive backlash. Human rights groups have condemned the proposal as a form of ethnic cleansing, highlighting that forced displacement contravenes international law.
Officials from Hamas have also opposed the plan, declaring that Palestinians would oppose such actions.
In addition, both Egypt and Jordan have previously turned down similar resettlement proposals, citing worries over regional stability and the rights of Palestinians.
