The leaders met last week in Paris during the reopening ceremony of Notre Dame Cathedral, where they engaged in discussions regarding the Ukraine crisis, despite reports that Trump was hesitant about attending the meeting.
Following their discussions, Trump remarked that Ukraine “would like to make a deal” to resolve the conflict with Russia. In contrast, Zelensky firmly stated that Kiev requires strong security guarantees, explicitly rejecting any potential territorial concessions.
A Reuters source close to the discussions indicated that in a 35-minute conversation held without advisers, Trump “behaved in a friendly, respectful and open manner and appeared to be in listening mode.” Multiple sources suggested that the president-elect seemed focused on establishing a personal connection with both leaders.
Sources revealed that while the three leaders "did not discuss specific details of any vision for peace," Trump expressed a desire for an “immediate ceasefire and negotiations to end the war quickly.” However, neither Trump nor his team “have been forthcoming on how exactly they envisage a solution” to the ongoing conflict.
A Ukrainian source shared that the topic of security guarantees to prevent the resumption of hostilities was addressed during the meeting, and when asked about Trump’s response, the source noted that “he’s thinking about all the details.”
In his campaign, Trump promised a quick resolution to the Ukraine conflict, even prior to his formal swearing-in in January. Last month, he declared his intention to appoint retired Army General Keith Kellogg as a special envoy for Ukraine and Russia.
Kellogg was reportedly one of the architects of a peace plan aimed at freezing the conflict along the existing front lines without acknowledging Russia's claims over Ukrainian territories, while also putting a hold on Kiev’s aspirations for NATO membership.
Moscow has consistently dismissed the idea of a frozen conflict, insisting that all objectives of its military operation—including Ukraine's neutrality, demilitarization, and denazification—must be fulfilled.
Russian President Vladimir Putin indicated this summer that Moscow would immediately declare a ceasefire and initiate peace talks once Kiev withdraws its troops from all Russian territories, including the Donetsk and Lugansk republics, as well as the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions.
