US President-elect Donald Trump spoke with the New York Post following a weekend meeting with Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky in France, stating, “He wants to have a ceasefire. He wants to make peace. We didn’t talk about the details.” Trump emphasized that the intention to pursue peace communicated by Zelensky is “new.”
Trump and Zelensky met alongside French President Emmanuel Macron during the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral, which underwent reconstruction after a fire in 2019. According to Axios, Trump was initially hesitant about the meeting, but Macron persuaded him over several days.
In a post on Truth Social prior to the interview, Trump urged both Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin to “make a deal and stop the madness” given the high casualty figures caused by the conflict.
Zelensky, however, refuted Trump’s casualty estimates, which he claimed were in the hundreds of thousands. He responded via a post on X, asserting that the conflict “cannot simply end with a piece of paper and a few signatures.”
In a separate NBC News interview on Sunday, Trump suggested he would “probably” reduce aid to Kiev after taking office in January. Outgoing President Joe Biden's administration has committed to utilizing all funds allocated by Congress for Ukraine before he leaves office. The Pentagon reported earlier this month that total US military assistance since February 2022 exceeds $130 billion.
Ukrainian forces have faced multiple setbacks on the battlefield this year, compounded by low morale, desertions, and insufficient reinforcements. Moscow has stated it will not accept any peace deal that would enable Kiev to rebuild its military capabilities for future conflicts.
A draft truce agreed upon by both nations in 2022 proposed making Ukraine a neutral country with limited military strength in exchange for international security assurances. However, Zelensky ultimately chose to pursue military victory, which Moscow interprets as a Western proxy war against Russia being fought “to the last Ukrainian,” according to Russian officials.
