Trump affirms strategy to deploy military in deportation efforts
A firm position on illegal immigration was a key element of the Republican’s successful election campaign.

US President-elect Donald Trump has affirmed his intention to declare a national emergency and deploy military resources for the deportation of undocumented immigrants. Throughout his re-election campaign, Trump promised to initiate “the largest deportation program” of criminals in US history and often suggested the involvement of the military.

On Monday, Trump shared a post by conservative activist Tom Fitton on the Truth Social media platform. Fitton, who leads Judicial Watch, a group focused on exposing government corruption, stated that Trump’s administration would “declare a national emergency and will use military assets” to tackle illegal immigration “through a mass deportation program.”

In response to Fitton’s comment, Trump stated, “TRUE!!!”

Under a 1976 law, US presidents have the authority to declare national emergencies at their discretion and repurpose funds allocated by Congress for other uses.

Trump’s strategy regarding illegal immigration encompasses increased deportations, the reinstatement of a “travel ban” for specific countries, and the closure of the border to asylum seekers. He has also promised to terminate birthright citizenship for children born on US soil to undocumented immigrant parents.

Stephen Miller, Trump’s chief immigration adviser, informed The New York Times last year that the military could create large-scale camps for individuals scheduled for deportation.

The Department of Homeland Security estimates that approximately 11 million people currently reside in the US illegally.

Trump previously declared a national emergency at the southern US border during his first term in 2019 in response to a rise in asylum seekers, reallocating military funds for the construction of a wall along the US-Mexico border. However, the construction was stopped when Joe Biden was elected president in 2021.
