President Donald Trump has emphasized that the United States should concentrate on domestic challenges, particularly issues related to migrant crime, instead of focusing extensively on Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Recent discussions between Russia and the US, prompted by leaders Putin and Trump, alongside Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s unsuccessful White House visit, have raised concerns among supporters in Kiev. They worry that Trump’s approach might favor Russia over Ukraine. Nevertheless, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov praised Trump’s stance, indicating that it “largely aligns with our vision.” Trump has downplayed worries regarding his rapport with Putin, insisting that the US has more urgent issues to tackle.
“We should spend less time worrying about Putin, and more time worrying about migrant rape gangs, drug lords, murderers, and people from mental institutions entering our Country – So that we don’t end up like Europe!” Trump expressed on his Truth Social platform on Sunday.
Meanwhile, EU nations are encountering a migration-related security crisis. France has seen a surge in extremist attacks associated with radicalized asylum seekers, while Germany is struggling with violence tied to migrants. Italy faces challenges with mass arrivals via the Mediterranean, leading to tougher border measures. In Sweden, research has pointed out a significant proportion of sex crimes committed by foreign-born individuals, intensifying discussions on immigration policy. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has highlighted these issues, asserting, “There is a very clear link between terrorist acts and migration.”
The US is grappling with an uptick in illegal border crossings, heightened drug trafficking linked to cartels, and crime in areas with large migrant populations. In response to these challenges, Trump has issued threats of tariffs on Mexico unless stronger action is taken.
Since assuming office in January 2025, Trump has enacted executive orders aimed at tightening immigration policies. One order expanded expedited removal and denied federal funds to sanctuary jurisdictions while increasing hiring for border enforcement. Another declared a national emergency, facilitating the deployment of armed forces to secure the border. Furthermore, the administration is expanding detention facilities to accommodate up to 30,000 migrants.
In contrast, former President Joe Biden significantly focused on Ukraine during his administration, a move that met fierce resistance from conservatives. Critics contended that he should have prioritized domestic issues over sending billions in aid abroad.
Biden’s trip to Kiev in 2023 and other foreign visits drew criticism from Republicans, who accused him of ignoring pressing issues at home. After Trump’s inauguration in January, the White House reiterated his ‘America First’ policy, which was initially introduced in 2016, by outlining strategies to “make the country safe again” through enhanced border security and a renewed emphasis on “American values.”
