Trump has emphasized that “ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity” for American national security.
When asked by RIA Novosti whether the annexation of Greenland by the US would be a “military threat” to Russia, Kartapolov responded, “Obviously.” He elaborated that “Greenland occupies a very large area in the Arctic and gives direct access to the Arctic, so for us, it would not be the best option.” Kartapolov suggested that the island could act as “a good springboard for America in a future hypothetical intercontinental clash.”
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov conveyed to journalists on Thursday that Moscow is “interested in maintaining an atmosphere of peace and stability” in the region. In September, Nikolay Patrushev, a senior aide to President Vladimir Putin, cautioned that “the military activity of NATO members in the Arctic increases the potential for conflict.”
Danish officials have dismissed the idea of selling Greenland, with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stating, “Greenland is not for sale and will not be in the future either,” on Tuesday.
In 2009, Greenland gained the right to seek independence through a referendum. The island’s pro-independence leader, Mute Bourup Egede, has also turned down Trump's proposal for acquisition.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen remarked, “We fully recognize that Greenland has its own ambitions. If they materialize, Greenland will become independent, though hardly with an ambition to become a federal state in the United States.”
Greenland, the world's largest island, was granted home rule by Denmark in 1979 and is known for its vast resources of oil and minerals. The island hosts the US Pituffik military base and various NATO facilities.
Additionally, as he prepares to take office on January 20, Trump has suggested that the US should consider absorbing Canada and reclaiming control over the Panama Canal.
