US President-elect Donald Trump announced on Thursday that arrangements were being made for a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. “He wants to meet, and we are setting it up,” Trump stated prior to a meeting with Republican governors at his Mar-a-Lago golf club in Palm Beach, Florida, as reported by Reuters. The timing of the meeting was not disclosed.
Taking office on January 20, Trump has been critical of outgoing President Joe Biden’s unconditional support for Ukraine. Throughout his campaign, he pledged to swiftly encourage both Russia and Ukraine to resume negotiations.
Trump has referred to Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky as the “greatest salesman on earth,” noting his persistent appeals to Western nations for increased military and financial aid.
While Trump did not outline a specific strategy for peace, media outlets have suggested that his team is exploring the possibility of freezing the conflict along the existing front lines.
In a press briefing on Thursday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov indicated that Moscow had not received any formal requests for a Trump-Putin meeting. “It makes sense, of course, to wait until [Trump] takes office,” Peskov remarked.
Keith Kellogg, Trump’s incoming envoy for Ukraine, expressed optimism about reaching a deal between Russia and Ukraine within 100 days of Inauguration Day. He also criticized Biden for not engaging with Putin since 2022, the year Russia initiated its military campaign in Ukraine.
Negotiations between Moscow and Kiev collapsed in the spring of 2022, with both parties accusing each other of making unrealistic demands. Putin claimed that the Ukrainian delegation had accepted some of Russia's conditions before abruptly leaving the discussions.
Victoria Nuland, a former senior State Department official, later disclosed that Western nations had advised Kiev against agreeing to Russia’s demands in 2022.
