In his victory speech early Wednesday, Trump pledged to “stop wars” and usher in a new era of prosperity for the United States. However, concerns have emerged in various media outlets regarding a potential trade war between the US and China that could mirror the tensions experienced during Trump’s first term in office.
During a phone conversation on Thursday, Xi congratulated Trump, asserting that history demonstrates the benefits of cooperation between China and the US, while confrontation leads to losses for both countries, according to Xinhua.
The Chinese leader emphasized that maintaining a stable, healthy, and sustainable relationship aligns with the interests of both nations and meets the expectations of the global community.
Xi reportedly expressed his hope that the US and China would prioritize mutual respect and collaborate for mutual benefit. He advocated for peaceful coexistence, enhancing dialogue, and effectively handling their differences.
Throughout his presidential campaign, Trump indicated intentions to impose tariffs on Chinese goods, a stance that has been echoed by outgoing President Joe Biden's administration, which has already enacted protectionist measures against Chinese imports. In September, the US announced significant tariff increases, raising duties on imported Chinese electric vehicles to 100% and imposing a 50% tariff on semiconductors, among other goods.
Several global leaders, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, have extended their congratulations to Trump following his victory over Democratic opponent Kamala Harris.
In response to Trump’s win, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov remarked on Wednesday that he was unsure if Russian President Vladimir Putin would reach out to congratulate Trump. He noted that relations between Moscow and Washington are at their “lowest point in history,” further characterizing the US as an “unfriendly country” that is involved in actions against Russia.
