In the wake of a 14-hour shutdown, the viral social media app TikTok has restored service to users in the US, attributing its return to President-elect Donald Trump's efforts and a promised reprieve. According to company statements, the shutdown was prompted by increasing US government pressure on ByteDance, TikTok's Chinese parent company, to divest its ownership amid national security concerns regarding the potential misuse of US user data. As a result, TikTok was temporarily inaccessible to American users and continues to be absent from app stores due to failing to meet a January 19 deadline set by a federal law enacted last year.
On Sunday, users logging into TikTok saw a pop-up message thanking Trump for facilitating its return. The message stated: “Welcome back! As a result of President Trump’s efforts, TikTok is back in the US.”
During a victory rally in Washington, DC, Trump confirmed the app's restoration. “As of today, TikTok is back,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic crowd. “Frankly, we have no choice; we have to save it.”
In his address, the president-elect announced plans to grant TikTok a 90-day extension once he takes office, providing the platform with additional time to find a buyer outside of China. “I’ll approve, but let the United States of America own 50% of TikTok,” Trump stated. “And the United States will do what we call a ‘joint venture.’”
TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew expressed appreciation to Trump earlier in the week for his role in keeping the app available to around 170 million US users. CNN reported, citing anonymous sources, that Chew intends to attend both Trump's victory rally and his inauguration on Monday.
In the meantime, the 14-hour outage led many American users to shift to RedNote, a Chinese-owned social media platform that quickly rose to the top of the US Apple App Store’s download charts. This transition was amplified by the viral hashtag #TikTokRefugee, which underscored the significant movement of users to the alternative application.
