Former President Donald Trump has publicly suggested that Vice President Kamala Harris undergo a cognitive test, describing her as “slow and lethargic.” In turn, Harris challenged Trump to disclose his medical records over the weekend, questioning “whether he is fit to be president of the United States.”
On Monday, Trump took to his Truth Social platform, stating that “it is very important that Kamala Harris pass a test on cognitive stamina and agility.” He expressed concerns, remarking, “Her actions have led many to believe that there could be something very wrong with her.” He also criticized CBS for editing a recent interview with Harris, alleging that they “illegally and unscrupulously replaced an answer she had given, which was totally ‘bonkers’, with another answer that had nothing to do with the question asked.”
Additionally, Trump claimed, “Also, she is slow and lethargic in answering even the easiest of questions. We just went through almost four years of that; we shouldn’t have to do it again!”
Last week, CBS News aired an interview with Harris that had undergone significant editing, where her lengthy answers—observed in a preview—were substituted with different responses before the final broadcast.
Initially, Trump directed his frustrations at CBS, calling for the network to be shut down and sold “to the highest bidder.” His latest comments regarding Harris were spurred by the vice president's remarks about his mental and physical fitness.
After releasing a statement from her doctor declaring her health to be “excellent,” Harris urged Trump to make his health records public, asserting that his reluctance indicates he does “not want the American people to see what he is doing and whether he is fit to be President of the United States.”
Trump, aged 78, is 19 years older than Harris and holds the record for being the oldest nominee for president by a major party in US history. Last November, he made public a letter from his doctor stating that his “overall health is excellent” and his “cognitive exams were exceptional.”
Dr. Bruce Aronwald, who has been Trump's personal physician since 2021, confirmed that Trump’s cancer screening tests were negative, cardiovascular assessments were normal, and that he managed to lose weight through regular physical activity and an “improved diet.”
Trump has been vocal in his criticism of President Joe Biden concerning mental and physical strength until July when Biden paused his reelection campaign after appearing disoriented during a debate with Trump. With Harris now leading the Democratic ticket, Trump has adapted his criticisms to target her instead.
“Joe Biden became mentally impaired. Kamala was born that way,” he stated at a recent campaign rally. He added, “She was born that way. And if you think about it, only a mentally disabled person could have allowed this to happen to our country,” referring to Harris in the context of border security issues.
