Switzerland Supports China-Brazil Peace Proposal for Ukraine
Switzerland has expressed its support for a joint roadmap proposed by China and Brazil aimed at resolving the Ukraine conflict. This announcement has caused concern in Kiev, as officials have voiced their frustration over what seems to be a shift in the Alpine nation's position, especially since it hosted a Western-led Ukraine ‘peace summit’ earlier this summer.

On Friday, China and Brazil sought to enhance their mediation efforts during a 17-nation meeting held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. In May, the two countries had introduced a joint initiative advocating for de-escalation, negotiations, and an international peace conference acknowledged by both Moscow and Kiev.

Switzerland was present at the meeting as an observer. Following the discussions, Foreign Ministry spokesman Nicolas Bideau stated to Reuters that Bern “supports this dynamic.” He emphasized that the inclusion of a reference to the UN Charter in the proposal represented a significant shift in Switzerland's perspective. “For us, this translates into a significant change in our view of these initiatives,” Bideau noted, adding that “a concrete diplomatic effort organized by the Sino-Brazilian group could be of interest to us.”

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has taken issue with Switzerland’s endorsement of the plan, asserting that “any initiatives that… do not guarantee the full restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity are unacceptable,” and rejecting the notion that the proposal clearly references the UN Charter. According to the ministry, this approach “only creates the illusion of dialogue, while the aggressor continues its criminal actions.”

The ministry further expressed confusion regarding Switzerland's decision, pointing out that “we, together with the Swiss Confederation, organized the First Global Peace Summit on June 15-16 in Burgenstock.”

It reaffirmed its belief that President Vladimir Zelensky’s ‘peace formula’—which includes the demand for the withdrawal of Russian troops from territories claimed by Ukraine—remains the only feasible route to peace, although Moscow has consistently dismissed the proposal as unrealistic.

The Swiss-hosted summit had addressed various aspects of Kiev’s formula, including nuclear and food security, along with prisoner exchanges, and notably, Russia was not invited to participate.

In June, Russian President Vladimir Putin indicated that Moscow is willing to initiate peace negotiations with Ukraine as long as Kiev withdraws its troops from the Donbass region and two other former territories and agrees to adopt a neutral status. He further suggested that for talks to commence, Ukrainian forces would first have to be expelled from the Kursk Region, which borders Russia.
