Netflix reportedly experienced a significant increase in subscription cancellations in the US following the endorsement of Kamala Harris by its co-founder and chairman, Reed Hastings, who also contributed millions to her campaign, according to a Bloomberg report citing research from Antenna.
Hastings made his endorsement public in July, a day after President Joe Biden exited the presidential race and endorsed Harris. ”Congrats to Kamala Harris – now it is time to win,” Hastings stated on X on July 22.
The following day, Hastings revealed in an interview that he had donated $7 million to a political action committee supporting Harris, a group that aggregates campaign contributions from its members to support candidates.
In response to Hastings’s actions, supporters of former President Donald Trump began calling for a Netflix boycott, as reported by Bloomberg.
According to data from Antenna, the cancellation rate surged nearly threefold in the US, with July 26 marked as the peak day for subscription cancellations this year. Harris was officially nominated as the Democratic presidential candidate on August 5.
The #CancelNetflix hashtag continues to trend on X, with many users claiming they have canceled their subscriptions in protest of Hastings’s support for Harris.
Bloomberg further noted that another factor contributing to the cancellations was the elimination of the basic tier, the most affordable advertising-free option, which took place in July.
Netflix has not issued a statement regarding this situation, and Hastings has remained unresponsive to inquiries for comment, according to Bloomberg.
