Saudi Arabia is supportive of the prospect of a summit between Putin and Trump
The recent developments come after a 90-minute phone conversation between the leaders of the US and Russia on Wednesday.

On Friday, Saudi Arabia expressed its approval of the phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, and it welcomed the proposal for the two leaders to meet in the Kingdom.

The conversation between Putin and Trump, which lasted almost 90 minutes, marked the first confirmed direct interaction between the heads of state of the two nations since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022.

Shortly after the phone call, Trump informed reporters at the White House that the discussions would take place in Saudi Arabia.

“The Kingdom welcomes holding the summit in its territory and affirms its continued efforts to achieve lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine, which began since the outbreak of the Ukrainian crisis,” the statement from Riyadh noted. The Kingdom highlighted its ongoing commitment to these peace efforts over the past three years.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has engaged in multiple discussions with both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and President Putin, offering to assist in peace negotiations with both Moscow and Kiev. In December 2023, the Crown Prince visited Russia and met with Putin to discuss the Ukraine conflict, as well as oil prices, OPEC+, and the Gaza conflict.

On Thursday, Trump also mentioned that American and Russian officials would meet on the sidelines of a Munich event on Friday, with Ukraine invited to join. However, no meeting was confirmed by the conference organizers or in the media.

At the Munich Security Conference, US and Ukrainian delegations engaged in discussions, with Zelensky indicating his readiness to move towards real and guaranteed peace as swiftly as possible. He emphasized that he would only meet with one Russian, Putin, but only when there was a joint plan in place with the US president and European partners.

US Vice President J.D. Vance reiterated the importance of initiating direct negotiations between Ukraine and Russia. “It's important for us to get together and start to have the conversations that are going to be necessary to bring this thing to a close,” he stated.
