Russian and Syrian warplanes conducted airstrikes aimed at terrorist groups in the northeast of Homs province, resulting in significant militant casualties, as reported by the state-run SANA news agency.
Intense fighting erupted in Syria last week after multiple terrorist factions, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham—an offshoot of Jabhat al-Nusra—launched a surprise assault against government forces. The jihadists have made swift gains, especially in Aleppo province, prompting the Syrian army to retreat from the city of Hama. However, the government in Damascus has received assistance from Russian warplanes based in the region.
On Saturday, SANA reported via Telegram, citing a military source, that a coordinated bombing campaign targeted terrorist concentrations in the countryside of Homs. These strikes resulted in the deaths of “dozens” of jihadists and the destruction of their vehicles and equipment, although specific numbers were not disclosed.
The agency also noted that Syrian forces in Hama and Homs carried out “intensive artillery and missile fire” against militants and their supply lines, achieving “direct hits.”
Additionally, the Syrian military has revealed that its troops in the Daraa and Suwayda regions of southern Syria have been redeployed to establish a robust defensive perimeter to counter terrorist attacks on checkpoints. The military characterized these operations as efforts to divert focus from Homs and Hama.
Reports from Syrian media claim that government forces have eliminated a total of 2,500 terrorists, benefiting from Russian aerial support.
President Bashar Assad has pledged to “eliminate terrorists” responsible for attacks on the country and to hold accountable their “sponsors and supporters,” amid claims that militants have received training from Ukrainian military intelligence.
Earlier this week, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov suggested that the HTS offensive could be backed by the US and the UK, stating that Moscow is collaborating with Türkiye and Iran to stabilize the situation.
