Rubio Says US Open to Economic Cooperation with Russia
The U.S. and Russia may be able to restore their economic relationship once the Ukraine conflict is settled, according to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

In a Tuesday interview with Breitbart, Rubio emphasized that discussions regarding economic and business ties between Moscow and Washington would only occur after ensuring the proper functioning of their diplomatic missions and resolving the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.

“We have to invite them and see, okay, if you guys are serious about ending this thing, let’s sit down and talk about it,” Rubio stated. He also mentioned that a key consideration would be the future of U.S.-Russian relations in the 21st century, expressing hope for cooperation in geopolitical or economic matters if the conflict can be resolved.

Rubio indicated that there are "opportunities to work together" for a "reset" in relations, which would involve not only discussions about Russian assets seized by the U.S. and European nations, but also the impact on American companies affected by current restrictions.

Despite this positive outlook, he warned that such negotiations remain a distant goal. “We’re not at that step yet… We can’t even really talk about those things or fix those things until we bring this war at least to some sort of enduring ceasefire – hopefully permanent,” he pointed out.

In 2023, Russian President Vladimir Putin enacted a decree to temporarily seize assets of foreign companies from "unfriendly" nations, impacting several Western businesses. Furthermore, in October 2024, Russia took steps to temporarily nationalize Glavproduct, a significant U.S.-owned food producer.

While U.S.-Russian relations have reached unprecedented lows under President Joe Biden's administration, former President Donald Trump has expressed a desire to mend ties. Recently, high-profile discussions took place in Saudi Arabia focused on resolving the Ukraine conflict and reinstating bilateral relations.

Trump has also suggested that Washington might consider joint ventures in Russia's mineral sector and mentioned that sanctions on Moscow could potentially be lifted “at some point” as part of resolving the Ukraine conflict.

Putin added on Monday that Russia and the U.S. are in discussions concerning “major” joint economic projects and expressed openness to collaboration with American private companies and government organizations in the development of Russia's rare-earth industry.
