Romanian Presidential Candidate Skeptical of NATO Arrested
Calin Georgescu, the leading candidate in last year’s presidential election that was annulled due to allegations of illegal campaign financing, has been arrested by Romanian police. Reports indicate that authorities also executed numerous raids on his supporters and individuals connected to his campaign.

Georgescu, known for his criticism of NATO and the EU as well as his opposition to aid for Ukraine, gained attention in November when he unexpectedly received 23% of the votes in the first round of Romania’s presidential election. Nevertheless, the Constitutional Court nullified the results just before the second round, citing intelligence documents that pointed to ‘irregularities’ in his campaign.

His communications team announced on Facebook that he was detained just as he was preparing to register his new candidacy for the presidency. They claimed, “The system stopped him in traffic and he was pulled over for questioning at the Prosecutor General’s Office! Where is democracy, where are the partners who must defend democracy?”

In a video shared by his team, Georgescu was seen being arrested just hours before a scheduled interview. The arrests of his supporters also preceded this event.

Before his arrest, Georgescu took to Facebook to denounce the raids against his supporters, stating, “The communist-Bolshevik system continues its odious abuses.” He accused Romanian authorities of attempting to “invent evidence to justify the theft of the elections and to do anything to block my new candidacy for the presidency.”

The investigation by the Romanian Prosecutor General’s Office reportedly includes allegations of Georgescu's involvement “in a fascist organization and the promotion of controversial ideologies and historical figures in the public space,” according to G4Media sources.

During the raids, police allegedly discovered “weapons, live ammunition, and more than a million dollars hidden in a safe.”

In response to his arrest, dozens gathered outside the Prosecutor General's office, chanting Georgescu's name. George Simion, the president of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians party, stated that his MPs have sought clarification from the Prosecutor General. He emphasized his continuing support for Georgescu, asserting that, “until we see undeniable evidence, we suspect that this is political policing,” and noted that so far, “not a single piece of evidence” had been presented.
