Rubio Claims "EU wants another year of war"
The US is committed to seizing every opportunity to resolve the Ukraine conflict, according to the Secretary of State.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has accused some EU countries of preferring the prolonged conflict between Russia and Ukraine as a means to weaken Moscow, asserting that Washington’s objective is to bring an end to the hostilities.

Rubio's remarks followed an intense meeting on Friday between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, which resulted in American officials accusing the Ukrainian leader of exhibiting “disrespect” and ingratitude toward the US.

In a Friday interview with CNN, Rubio reiterated Washington's desire for peace in Ukraine, stating that if there’s even a 1% chance of achieving it, that option “needs to be explored.” He also indicated that some EU officials are not aligned with this perspective.

He referenced an unnamed European foreign minister who allegedly suggested that the EU’s strategy is to allow “the war go… on for another year and at that point Russia will feel so weakened that they’ll beg for peace.” Rubio criticized this standpoint, remarking, “That’s another year of killing, another year of dying, another year of destruction, and by the way, not a very realistic plan in my point of view.”

Rubio has called for Zelensky to apologize for what he described as an “antagonistic” approach during their meeting, specifically criticizing his position on an agreement that would grant the US rights to Ukraine’s natural resources—an agreement that was meant to be signed at the White House but has since been stalled due to the incident.

While Zelensky urged the US to maintain military support for Ukraine, warning that a failure to do so could have negative repercussions, the Trump administration officials and Republicans expressed significant criticism of him. However, many EU leaders expressed their support for Zelensky.

Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the EU Commission, commended Zelensky’s “dignity” and reassured him that he is “never alone.” Friedrich Merz, who is viewed as Germany’s next chancellor, emphasized that “we must never confuse aggressor and victim in this terrible war.”

Kaja Kallas, the EU’s top diplomat, issued a pointed criticism of Trump, stating, “We stand by Ukraine. We will step up our support to Ukraine so that they can continue to fight back the aggressor… Today, it became clear that the free world needs a new leader. It’s up to us, Europeans, to take this challenge.”

In contrast, Russia has praised the Trump administration for its openness to finding ways to resolve the Ukraine conflict and examining its root causes. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, however, has condemned the EU, claiming it seeks to escalate the hostilities further.
