Tech billionaire and Department of Government Efficiency chief Elon Musk has referred to US Vice President J.D. Vance as “our future President,” igniting speculation about Vance’s political aspirations.
Musk's comments followed a post on X in response to the tense interaction between Vance and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer regarding free speech policies during a recent Oval Office meeting.
During Starmer’s visit to the White House to meet with President Donald Trump and administration officials, Vance defended his position on digital censorship, mirroring statements he made at last month’s Munich Security Conference. “We also know there have been infringements on free speech that affect not just the British,” Vance stated. “Of course, what the British do in their own country is up to them, but it also impacts American technology companies and, by extension, American citizens.”
Starmer brushed off Vance’s concerns, asserting that free speech is robustly protected in the UK. “We’ve had free speech for a very, very long time in the United Kingdom, and it will last for a very, very long time,” the Labour Party leader remarked.
On Friday, Musk took to his social media platform X to declare, “Best VP ever and our future President.”
Musk has consistently criticized Starmer and frequently aligns with Vance on significant foreign policy matters, particularly regarding free speech and US support for Ukraine.
The tech mogul's endorsement arrives as Vance and Trump confronted Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky during an Oval Office meeting on Friday. Vance was the first to speak, criticizing Zelensky for recent public appearances that showcased the devastation of war, accusing him of conducting “propaganda tours” and branding the Ukrainian leader “disrespectful.”
This confrontation led to a shortened agenda, with Trump reportedly dismissing Zelensky and suggesting he return when he was “ready to pursue peace.” Musk later added his thoughts, stating that Zelensky had “destroyed himself in the eyes of the American people” in a post on X.
Musk, appointed to lead DOGE when Trump took office in January, has been charged with reducing governmental inefficiency and cutting federal spending. His endorsement of Vance marks the second time in recent weeks that he has shown support for the vice president, previously tweeting: “Best VP ever and hopefully our future President.”
At 40, Vance is the third-youngest vice president in US history. His relationship with Trump has transformed significantly since the former president’s first term. Having once been a vocal critic of Trump, Vance opposed his candidacy in 2016, characterizing him as “cultural heroin” for conservatives and questioning his character. However, he later reversed his position, gaining Trump’s endorsement in his successful 2022 Ohio Senate run, solidifying his role within Trump’s political circle.
