Pro-Palestinian demonstrators confront police in Amsterdam
On Wednesday, police in Amsterdam dispersed an illegal gathering at the city's Dam Square, where pro-Palestinian activists clashed with officers.

The gathering saw hundreds of participants defying an emergency court ban on demonstrations, which had been put in place following incidents of violence between pro-Palestinian groups and supporters of the Israeli football club Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Protesters displayed placards that read “We want our streets back” and chanted “Free Palestine,” as reported by Al Jazeera. After attempting to persuade the crowd to disband, police officers, equipped with batons and riot shields, proceeded to break up the demonstration.

Authorities reported that 265 activists were transported on buses to the borough of Westerpark, where such demonstrations are allowable.

Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema urged politicians to refrain from "adding fuel to the fire," cautioning that it could lead to increased participation from new demonstrators and rioters, thereby escalating tensions that might endanger police officers.

More than 60 individuals were arrested in connection with riots that took place after a match between Maccabi and the Dutch club Ajax in Amsterdam on November 7. Leading Dutch officials, including Prime Minister Dick Schoof, decried the “antisemitic violence” associated with pro-Palestinian protests. In contrast, members of the local Palestinian community accused Maccabi supporters of inciting violence through anti-Arab chants.
