Yoon is reportedly under investigation for "insurrection." The situation escalated on Tuesday when he made an unexpected televised announcement declaring emergency martial law, claiming that the opposition, which he accused of having sympathies for North Korea, was preparing for a "rebellion."
In response, 190 lawmakers managed to gather at the National Assembly despite military restrictions and unanimously voted to rescind the decree within hours. This provoked thousands to take to the streets to voice their opposition to the president’s actions.
By early Wednesday, Yoon announced the decision to lift martial law, a move he made less than six hours after its enforcement. Later that day, the opposition Democratic Party, which holds a majority in parliament, revealed plans to initiate impeachment proceedings against him.
Yoon's People Power Party (PPP) has vowed to thwart the impeachment effort. "All 108 lawmakers of the People Power party will stay united to reject the president’s impeachment," stated Choo Kyung-ho, the party's floor leader, during a live-streamed meeting.
Han Dong-hoon, head of the PPP, emphasized that the party’s resistance to impeachment does not imply a defense of the president's unconstitutional martial law actions.
According to Yonhap news agency, the opposition is set to conduct an impeachment vote in parliament on Saturday. They need support from only eight PPP members for the motion to succeed.
Should the motion pass, Yoon will be suspended while awaiting a ruling from the Constitutional Court. If the judges uphold the impeachment, a new election in South Korea will be required within two months.
