According to a recent survey, nearly 80% of Americans suspect the government is withholding information about recent drone sightings that have surged across the nation over the last month. Additionally, about half of those surveyed perceive these drones as a potential threat.
The CBS News/YouGov survey, conducted from December 18-20 with 2,244 US adults, revealed that just over half of the population is closely monitoring the situation. Among those particularly engaged, the suspicion of government involvement or cover-ups is increasing. The survey found that 53% of respondents “consider those drones a threat” to the US, while 78% believe the government is “keeping information it knows from the public.” The margin of error for the survey is 2.4 points.
Reports of large, unidentified “drones” appeared in mid-November, primarily over New Jersey, which marked the beginning of this wave of sightings. The phenomenon quickly attracted media attention, leading to similar reports emerging from states such as New York and Pennsylvania. Subsequently, sightings were reported across various regions of the country, including southern states, the Midwest, western mountain states, and the Pacific coast.
In response to the growing number of sightings, local, state, and federal officials have been working to alleviate public confusion and concern. However, multiple agencies—including the FBI, Department of Homeland Security, FAA, and Department of Defense—have not uncovered any credible threat from these incidents.
“The FBI has received tips on more than 5,000 reported drone sightings in the last few weeks, generating approximately 100 leads, and the federal government is supporting state and local officials in investigating these reports,” the FBI, DHS, FAA, and DoD stated in a joint announcement last week. “After closely examining the technical data and tips from concerned citizens, we assess that the sightings to date include a combination of lawful commercial drones, hobbyist drones, law enforcement drones, manned fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and stars mistakenly reported as drones.” Further, they noted, “We have not identified anything anomalous and do not assess that the activity to date presents a national security or public safety risk over civilian airspace in New Jersey or other states in the northeast.”
Though many cases remain unresolved, state and local law enforcement along with independent experts have reported similar inconclusive findings.
The US military has acknowledged previous drone incursions over military installations in the past year, but Pentagon representatives have maintained that such flyovers are not unusual and are typically not conducted with hostile intentions. Despite these assurances, public skepticism continues, prompting calls for greater transparency from government officials.
US President-elect Donald Trump has echoed these sentiments, suggesting that any unidentified object in the sky should be shot down. In a post on Truth Social, he remarked, “Mystery drone sightings all over the country. Can this really be happening without our government’s knowledge? I do not think so! Let the public know, and now. Otherwise, shoot them down!”
