US President-elect Donald Trump is committed to addressing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. He has indicated that he is prepared for discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has also expressed a desire to meet "as soon as possible," according to Trump.
Speaking at the Turning Point’s AmericaFest convention on Sunday, Trump outlined his plans for decisive executive actions starting from his first day back in the Oval Office, emphasizing a focus on both domestic matters and global security challenges.
“President Putin said that he wants to meet with me as soon as possible. So we have to wait for this, but we must end that war,” Trump told the audience.
The President-elect characterized the ongoing conflict as a “horrible” humanitarian crisis of unprecedented scale, noting that it has led to the deaths of "millions of soldiers."
In terms of military losses, Moscow estimates that Ukraine's army sustained over half a million casualties in 2024 alone, bringing the total losses since the conflict escalated in 2022 to more than one million, according to Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov. In contrast, Kiev claims that Russian casualties exceed 750,000, with both sides accusing each other of downplaying true numbers.
Trump reiterated his belief that both the Ukraine conflict and the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel could have been avoided during his presidency. “That war would have never happened if I were president,” he asserted, emphasizing that the global security environment would have been significantly different.
He has consistently claimed that he could resolve the Ukraine issue within "24 hours" upon taking office, using a strategy he refers to as “peace through strength,” though he has yet to provide detailed plans on how he intends to achieve this.
Putin has previously stated that Trump's remarks about resolving the conflict "deserve attention" and has shown a willingness to engage in discussions with the President-elect.
“Should there be an opportunity for a meeting with the newly elected President Donald Trump, I am confident there will be plenty to discuss,” Putin mentioned on Thursday, acknowledging that he had not spoken to Trump in over four years. “Of course, I’m ready to talk anytime; I will be ready to meet with him if he wishes.”
During his end-of-year press conference on Thursday, Putin reiterated Moscow's openness to negotiating with Kiev without any preconditions, other than those previously agreed upon in Istanbul in 2022. These agreements involve a neutral, non-aligned stance for Ukraine and certain limitations on the deployment of foreign weaponry. He emphasized that any negotiations must take these factors into account.
