Trump was in Arizona on Thursday, preparing to visit the US-Mexico border to discuss his stance on illegal immigration. Just before his scheduled remarks, the Cochise County sheriff's office issued an alert regarding the threat.
Ronald Lee Syvrud "is being sought as an investigative lead for threats to kill a presidential candidate,” stated Sheriff Mark Dannels in a Facebook post.
The 66-year-old Syvrud’s last known residence was in Benson, approximately 65 kilometers from Montezuma Pass, where Trump's event was planned. He is said to have outstanding warrants in Wisconsin for driving under the influence and failure to appear in court, and in Arizona for a hit-and-run, along with “failing to register as a sex offender.”
The Wisconsin Department of Corrections has Syvrud listed on their sex offender registry for “second-degree sexual assault of a child,” as reported by Fox News.
When asked about the situation during an event, Trump said he hadn't been informed of the manhunt.
“No, I have not heard that but I am not that surprised and the reason is because I want to do things that are very bad for the bad guys,” the former president remarked.
He acknowledged the potential dangers of being at the border but emphasized, “I have a job to do.”
This incident follows an event on July 13, where a gunman opened fire from a nearby rooftop during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, narrowly missing Trump and fatally wounding one audience member, while seriously injuring two others. A Secret Service counter-sniper ultimately shot the attacker, leading to heightened security measures for Trump and the resignation of the Secret Service director. These new measures include the use of bulletproof glass barriers at his outdoor rallies.
