Pete Hegseth Approved as New Pentagon Chief
US Vice President J.D. Vance cast the crucial tie-breaking vote in favor of Donald Trump’s nominee, Pete Hegseth, as the new secretary of defense on Friday.

The Senate confirmed Hegseth, an army veteran and contributor to Fox News, after a divided vote that saw Republican Senators Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins, and Mitch McConnell joining Democrats in opposition.

Hegseth has emphasized his commitment to enhancing combat readiness and elevating the status of military service, reflecting on the importance of restoring a “warrior culture.” During his confirmation hearing earlier this month, he stated his focus would be “laser-focused on warfighting, lethality, meritocracy, standards, and readiness.” President Donald Trump expressed confidence that Hegseth would serve as “a courageous and patriotic champion of our ‘Peace through Strength’ policy.”

Hegseth's nomination faced controversy due to allegations of sexual assault and excessive drinking, which he vigorously denied, labeling them as “anonymous false claims” designed to tarnish his reputation. Critics have also voiced concerns about his qualifications to lead the Pentagon, with McConnell asserting that Hegseth had not provided “a strategic vision” necessary for addressing America's adversaries.

In support of his nomination, Hegseth asserted his capability to bring transformation to the military, declaring, “It’s time to give someone with dust on his boots the helm. A change agent,” as he addressed the Senate.
