In a passionate speech to the European Parliament on Tuesday, Vistisen expressed his disdain for Trump's proposal, which Trump has reiterated as crucial for U.S. national security based on Greenland's mineral wealth. Greenland, a former Danish colony, has been under home rule from Copenhagen since 1979.
Taking the podium in Strasbourg, Vistisen addressed Trump directly, stating, “Dear President Trump, listen very carefully. Greenland has been part of the Danish kingdom for 800 years. It’s an integrated part of our country. It is not for sale.” He then added, “Let me put it in words you might understand. Mr. Trump, f**k off.”
Following this outburst, Nicolae Stefanuta, the vice-president of the European Parliament, admonished Vistisen for his language, declaring, “It is not okay in this house of democracy. Regardless of what we think of Mr. Trump, it is not possible to use such language.”
Later, in a post on X, Vistisen appeared to soften his tone towards Trump. He wrote, “Mr President, in the Danish People’s Party, we fight for Denmark just as you fight for your country, the USA. Greenland is Danish, it is not for sale – and neither threats nor prayers can change that. Treat your allies well, and we’ll return the courtesy.”
Both Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland’s pro-independence administration have dismissed any notion of selling the self-governing territory to the U.S. This discussion first emerged during Trump's initial term when he proposed the acquisition of Greenland in 2019; Frederiksen's rejection of the idea had led to the cancellation of Trump's visit to Denmark.
