Last month, as Israel was gearing up for long-range strikes against Iranian targets in retaliation for an earlier attack by Tehran, documents allegedly from the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency surfaced on a Telegram channel. This agency is responsible for the collection and analysis of satellite and aerial imagery.
The leaked materials outlined the movements of Israeli military assets and included predictions about the impending attack. These documents were reportedly accessible to members of the ‘Five Eyes’ intelligence alliance, which encompasses Australia, Britain, Canada, New Zealand, and the US.
Rahman had high-level security clearance for sensitive compartmented information, according to reports citing court documents. Last week, a federal court in Virginia charged him with two counts of willful transmission of national defense information. The FBI has confirmed an ongoing investigation into the leak.
Israel executed its operation against Iran on October 26, roughly a month after Iran's strike on Israel. The Iranian attack in October was a response to the killings of leaders of pro-Palestinian militant groups, including events on Iranian soil, which the Iranian government attributed to West Jerusalem. The tensions escalated amid an Israeli military operation in Gaza that was initiated after an incursion by Hamas in October 2023, coupled with cross-border clashes involving the Lebanese group Hezbollah.
Earlier this week, a Boston court sentenced former US Air National Guardsman Jack Teixeira to 15 years in prison for leaking classified documents regarding the Ukraine conflict. In March, he pleaded guilty to six counts of willful transmission of secret information under the Espionage Act.
